Bad start to the morning when you slide the seat in, turn the key and nothing happens. Whether the weather is messing with your engine or you've left the overhead light on in the cabin, a dead battery is a frustrating experience that can put you in a difficult situation. But if you have jumper cables, a friend (or stranger) with a car, and some trusted know-how, starting your vehicle is simple. Here's a little refresher for old-timers – or a quick primer for new drivers – on how to jump-start a dead car battery:
Double-check before jump-starting:
Your battery. Make sure it is not leaking, damaged, frozen or corroded. If you suspect that your car is unsafe to start, call a professional.
For metal objects and open flames. These include cigarettes, watches, phones (the key you hit the engine with), etc. You want the spark to be inside the engine, not outside.
Your key. Remove it from the ignition and store it in a safe (and memorable) place.
Your owners manual. Before you begin, look for the section that explains how to start a particular battery. Battery voltage. Both cars must have the same voltage battery - most are 12 volts, but you never want to pair a 6-volt battery with a 12-volt battery.
Follow these tips for startup: Prepare both cars. Put each car in park or neutral, turn them off, set the parking brake, and pop the hood. He must not touch the car. Your jumper cables have 4 sets of clips or alligator clips. Red is positive and black is negative.
Here is the correct order of the connecting cables:
- RED to DEAD: Connect the red terminal to the positive terminal of the dead battery.
- RED to DONOR: Connect the red pole to the positive pole on the donor vehicle's working battery.
- BLACK to DONOR: Same car! Connect the black terminal to the negative terminal on the donor vehicle's working battery.
- BLACK to METAL: Return to dead battery. Attach the black clip to an unpainted metal part of the dead car (such as a bolt or bracket) that is not directly next to the battery.
- Start the donor car engine and let it run for 1-2 minutes.
- Start the car with a dead battery and let it run for 1-2 minutes to recharge.
Disconnect the cables in reverse order and start driving your resurrected vehicle for 30 minutes so it can recover again the next time. If your car battery discharges frequently, it may be time for a new one.
