How far can you REALLY drive when you see the low gasoline warning light?
Generally speaking, 48 to 80 kilometers from when the fuel light comes on. As a general rule, you always want the tank to be about a quarter full.
But if you find that the gas light has come on, don't panic, you probably have another 30 to 50 miles to go before you stop. A 2015 Ford Explorer has about 56 to 128 kilometers on it after the gas light comes on. That range is more of an average; technically how far you can go with the gas light on depends on the type of vehicle and its condition. For example, a smaller car like the Nissan Altima can travel 130 to 183 kilometers after the gas light comes on. But a Ford F-150 pickup truck has about 90 to 128 kilometers of range after the fuel light comes on.
Aside from being stuck somewhere out of gas, idling can also damage your vehicle. When idling, the catalytic converter may crack, which you will need to repair or completely replace. It can also damage the fuel pump and leave the vehicle with a clogged fuel filter. Dirt settles at the bottom of the tank and can pass through the pump more easily; fuel flow slows down. The gasoline in the vehicle acts as a type of coolant for the electric pump motor, which becomes compromised when you do not have enough fuel in the tank.
When you run out of fuel, the fuel pump draws in air and creates heat, and can cause premature wear or even pump failure. To replace the fuel pump, you will need to drain and remove the gas tank, which can cost up to $1,000. When the fuel light comes on, the Honda Accord has about 74 kilometers left. Be careful not to misfire as the fuel pump may begin to draw in air. When you run out of gas, the engine loses power, which can make you feel a vibration or hesitation when you step on the pedal.
Vehicles known to drive longer after the gas light is on Based on 2015 model year vehicles, a Toyota Camry has about 2.6 gallons of gas in the tank right after the gas light comes on. This gives the Camry driver anywhere from 104 to 146 kilometers of driving range before the car stops. Ford Fusion drivers have about 56 to 128 kilometers left. The Nissan Rogue uses about 11 liters of gas up to 159 kilometers with the gas light on. The Hyundai Sonata has 64 kilometers left with the gas light on. The Volkswagen Jetta has 7 liters of gas left for another 91 to 136 kilometers on the road.
